Tuesday May 25 2010 A Feminist Responds to The Sex and the City 2 Backlash

It seems you can't go anywhere these days without seeing Sex and the City backlash. Two hackneyed films shouldn't erase the memory of a landmark television series. Here's a list of seven reasons why Sex and the City was important:

1) It realistically depicted the primary concern plaguing the lives of successful women: finding a man.

2) Besides their careers, the ladies had other hobbies. Like, once they did yoga. And another time there was a fashion show. And there was an episode where Carrie did trapeze. And the rest of the time they were pursuing men.

3) The scripts included female conversations that weren't polite or focused on domesticity. Instead, the women were constantly talking about their relationships with men.

4) In a culture that glorifies youth, the main characters age and remain attractive to men.

5) The women live in one of the most culturally diverting cities in the world, and they still maintain their focus on going out solely to meet men.

6) Oh, and they wear lots of pretty clothes, too. Women on television and in movies never did that before Sex and the City.

7) Finally, the series had a satisfying conclusion in which all four main characters were paired off romantically with wonderful and successful men. So, next time you want to make a joke about Sarah Jessica Parker's horse face, please remember the impact that Sex and the City had on feminism. It completely changed the landscape of television forever. I mean, without it, we would never have had Lipstick Jungle.
