« The Season Finale of Broad City | Main| Low Key » Monday Nov 08 2010 All The World's a Conan Ad! Also: TBS Throws George Lopez to the Wolves

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 5:20PM It appears that every pixel of blank space on the whole entire Internet has been wrapped with advertising for Conan today. (Except all our space!) This is what MILLIONS OF DOLLARS (give some to me!) of online advertising looks like.

Thanks for pulling America out of the recession with these ads, Conan!

BUT HERE'S SOMETHING THAT'S LAME:You'd think that these network execs who've become soooo Internet-savvy could have set aside 1/100th of this marketing budget and use it towards live-streaming the show on TBS.com. Why are we being driven to cable TV when more and more people are cutting the cord and watching stuff exclusively online? Ratings will be big or whatever, but still. People are going to compare its ratings to the Jersey Shore finale, last week's RAW, or that deadly Deadliest Catch episode. Seems like a blown opportunity to set some new standards! If you're going to fish where the fishes are, then you should provide for those fish the food they really enjoy eating. (frozen shrimp?)

Here's one other thing worth mentioning: While Conan got wrapped around the finest properties online, poor George Lopez was banished to the TMZ homepage! The ad isn't even flattering. :( Why does TBS hate him??

To be fair, live streaming on the internet would not endear TBS to all the cable operators out there that pay Time Warner per cable subscriber, a revenue stream cable networks rely on. In fact, I'd say if their contracts at this point didn't outright forbid it, they'd at least be able to put a stop to it. And as much as that sucks for most, they have every right to - if the content is available elsewhere, why pay TBS for it?
