Friday, April 30, 2010 at 3:32PM Are you ready to win something?? Imagine we are Oprah and you are you, and you're shrieking because you just won Myq Kaplan's new CD, Vegan Mind Meld, available now from Live at Comix. omg!

The Comedians magazine calls Myq Kaplan "a comedy machine, in the best possible way. The way that some machines vend soda or prevent other machines from killing future revolutionaries... that's how Myq Kaplan does comedy: relentlessly, methodically, unblinkingly." Myq recently made his television debut on The Tonight Show and won The Emerging Comic Award at this year's ECNY Awards. His half-hour Comedy Central Presents special airs TONIGHT at 11:30 PM.

According to his bio, "Myq enjoys words, social justice, Netflix, and comic books. Also non-comic books, ping-pong, and being great with women. And grammar and run-on sentence fragments. And of course, being hilarious to his demographic, which is anyone who might know the word demographic."

Friday, April 30, 2010 at 1:25PM We got this email today from a company called Gotcast which says they're holding online auditions on behalf of NBC:

> The NBC Universal Talent Diversity Initiative is currently searching the country for comedians from diverse backgrounds. The Stand-Up for Diversity program has helped launch many comedians’ careers through industry showcases and nation-wide events.

Full details of the talent search can be found at: _____

The Stand-Up for Diversity program has helped launch many comedians’ careers through industry showcases and nation-wide events. All Top50 eligible most-voted member videos will be submitted to NBC for review, and at least one person will be selected for a live interview.

Guess you upload a video and get your friends to vote on you and then you win a chance to audition or something. We were about to post the info as-is, but it seemed a little weird so we typed 'gotcast' into Google and saw the following condemnation before we finished keystrokin':

Suddenly this Gotcast site is reminding us of a pickled beet and goat cheese terrine, aka something you should keep far away from. The NBC Universal Diversity Talent Initiative is a real thing though and Stand-Up for Diversity is legit--live auditions are being held this summer in New York, San Antonio and San Francisco. Not online.

The official NBC Talent Universal Initiative site, DiverseCity NBC, gives some sage advice to people who are curious about auditioning for Stand Up for Diversity or anything else:

> Usually your agent or manager will tell you about auditions. If you don't have one there are several places to find out about non-union as well as some union auditions: Backstage West, Breakdown Services - Actors Access, LAcasting.com, Nowcasting.com or the NBC Diverse City job board just to name a few. But be realistic about where you are in your career. If you do not have a SAG card, try going out on some non-union films and commercials to build that reel and those contacts. If you keep yourself working, the momentum will eventually build into better and better jobs.

Friday, April 30, 2010 at 10:00AM Lots of news out of the Second City / iO camps this past week. Any eyewitnesses in these camps who want to throw us feature interviews, show recaps, show previews, behind-the-scenes gossip, photo essays, and et cetera, please do email.

--Time Out Chicago has a nice profile piece on the new blood at Second City, both at Mainstage and in the e.t.c. theater. Profiles include Tim Baltz, Allison Bills, Brendan Jennings, Sam Richardson, Tim Robinson, and Mary Sohn. In addition, e.t.c. opens their new revue, “The Absolute Best Friggin’ Time of Your Life” this Sunday, May 2.

--TOC also succinctly wrapped the 2010 Chicago Improv Festival.

--New Apiary pal Daniel Solzman has a fun interview with former Second City and Boom Chicago cast member Joe Canale over at his blog, Chicago Improv Celebrity News.

Joe Canale performs with Tim Meadows and Brad Morris at iO | Photo by Angela Manginelli --Solzman also alerts us to the All-Star Celebrity Jam for Charity month, beginning at midnight TONIGHT at iO. According to their recent missive: “iO has designated April 30th - May 28th as All-Star Celebrity Jam for Charity month. All month in the Jam slot (Fridays at midnight) we will have the most talented improvisers in the city, as well as local celebrities, performing short-form games and Jam favorites--all in the name of charity. The success of this event is dependent upon the improv community and its friends all over Chicagoland donating their time and talent to pack the house…Proceeds from the door as well as donations solicited during the show will go to Global Aid Network (www.globalaid.net) and will be used specifically to aid in relief efforts taking place in Haiti.”

Hey improv / sketch crew, what else is the haps? Tell us tell us tell us.

GIVE ME BACK MY SON! For New York's indiest improv nerds, this weekend commemorates the third bi-annual "Up the Creek Improv Camp," also known as The Longest Three-Day Stretch of Driving Imaginary Cars and Digging Imaginary Holes With Imaginary Shovels. Hosted by The Creek and The Cave, the sweetest little duplex bar-performance space in Long Island City, the improv romp will feature 96 of New York's best and brightest indie teams (the generic term for an improv group that isn't affiliated with or hosted by any particular theater). As far as the festival goes -- think SXSW for long-form improv.
