Friday Jul 29 2011 SPOTTED: Alden Ford and Justin Tyler and Some Turkey Burgers
Friday, July 29, 2011 at 10:10AM Sidecar's Alden Ford and Justin Tyler were SPOTTED recently in Union Square handing out FREE! turkey burgers on behalf of some kind of mobile advocacy group/death panel dedicated to the slaughter of hundreds of millions of adorable baby turkeys. A truck full of turkey slingers is cruising around NYC this week, it might be in front of your home or office right now. Go look. Not sure what the microphone in this picture is for. Is a reality series about turkey sandwiches in the works? Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 4:40PM With JFL Chicago sweeping the Windy City, The Tribune went door to door asking comedy folks there what's in their wallet. Short answer: a couple nickels to rub together and a bus ticket to the coast. Here's an example of how one person survives there:
> STACEY SMITH calls herself a goofball. At one point, Smith, 23, was taking classes at the city’s big four improv theaters simultaneously: iO, Second City, The Annoyance Theatre and ComedySportz. Between tuition, renting rehearsal space and hiring an improv coach, Smith said she had spent roughly $7,000 on training during her two years in Chicago.
> These are the ways Smith stays financially afloat: (1) She’s a nanny 10 hours a day, four days a week; (2) she began doing voiceover work, including a Web ad for Motorola headsets; (3) she bought “HTML for Dummies,” taught herself Web design and now creates websites for fellow comedians; (4) she wrote a one-woman show called “Confessions of a Chubby Tomboy” and performs it at comedy festivals; (5) she set up a donation page on her website that reads, “Thank you for supporting live independent theatre.” So far she’s received $800.
The resume of Stacey Smith sounds eerily similar to that of you, me and everyone we know. So do you think all these formative Chicago comedy schools are all just teaching future generations to be jack-of-no-trade, flittering fruit flies with an aversion to making serious dough? Or is that some kind of unique skill we all bring to the table? The Apiary | 2 Comments | 37 References in General Interest Wednesday Jun 01 2011 Mike Myers Debuts a New Act with The Modern Weepers
Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 2:41PM Fred Armisen and Mike Myers are The Modern Weepers | Photos via BrooklynVegan
BrooklynVegan whipped its readers into an incensed frenzy, pumping speculation on the people behind an unknown band performing a sold out show at the Mercury Lounge last weekend called The Modern Weepers. As it turned out, The Modern Weepers were none other than Mike Myers and Fred Armisen trying out a brand new act. Spike Jonze was apparently at the show to film it all, which tells me this is just the tip of the iceberg. One BV commenter intuits:
> If Spike Jonze was filming this, I doubt it was just a one-off thing. I mean, it probably is one-off in the sense that there likely won't be a tour (at least not right now), but not a one-off in that this probably isn't the first we will hear of Modern Weepers. If I had to guess, it seems like they're testing the waters for a new schtick (aka Austin Powers, Love Guru, etc) that they can use in a future film or other project.
It's good to see Myers back on the scene!

Monday, May 23, 2011 at 1:19PM If you're heading to the beach this Memorial Day weekend, here's a quick checklist of things to pack:
* Sunscreen
* Beach umbrella
* Thong
* Osama Bin Laden is Dead T-shirt
I was just in Miami (hanging with Gloria Estefan) and I stopped working on my tan long enough to notice that the beach shops were buzzing with commemorative Osama t-shirts. They're fashionable AND great for swimming in.
Which is your favorite??

Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 4:55PM In his weekly email blasts to promo Sweet, Seth Herzog ruminates about current events and whatever else is going on in the world. This week, Seth shared a first hand account of the ticker tape parade at Ground Zero held in honor of Osama Bin Laden's body getting riddled with bullets and dumped in the ocean. He writes:
> Well, we did it, America. We killed Osama Bin Laden (But let’s be honest, his career has been dead for years). No more, "We can blah, blah, blah but we can’t find Osama" jokes. Judging from the reaction, it feels like America really needed this win. I live across the street from Ground Zero, so I’m reminded everyday of what happened. And when I heard that people were gathering down there. I decided to go downstairs and see the emotion for myself. Immediately you felt that rare NY vibe, where strangers are just coming up to you and introducing themselves, hugging you and saying, "It’s a good night" and "Finally" in proud yet somber tones. Once I got to the "ground zero of celebrating" which was at Ground Zero, everyone was excitedly staring at each other, and no one knew what to do. Like when a city wins a championship: There’s all this energy and no one knows where to direct it. So that’s when cars get turned over and businesses get burned. In this case, they sang. Boy did they sing. Anything that was remotely patriotic was sung, "The Star Spangled Banner," "God Bless America," "My Country Tis of Thee," and then when there was nothing else: the Pledge of Allegiance. No joke. And it happened more than once. People were climbing up the poles, waving flags, and yes, spewing champagne on the crowd like a rap video. Then as the crowd grew, so did the “attention seekers,” the kind that show up outside MJ trials or OJ hearings. There was a guy in a Captain America costume (ok, appropriate) and then a dude with an accordion and a Donald Duck costume (Um. Sure. I guess both Disney and Osama hated Jews, so that’s something). But once guys starting yelling at women, who were up on people’s shoulders, to "Show your tits" it was time for me to leave (only because I don’t think any tits were going to be shown). Its weird to cheer for someone’s death, it made me think this is what it must have felt like to be at the Roman Coliseum. Sometimes I think we’re sore winners.
