The Apiary | Post a Comment tagged The Magnet Theater in Improv Thursday Dec 03 2009 IMPROV TO GET EXCITED ABOUT - CURTIS GWINN WORKSHOPS
Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 1:46PM Curtis Gwinn of Death by Roo Roo | Photo: Keith Huang
Anyone who knows anything about improv in the Big Stinky knows of UCBT chieftain Curtis Gwinn (Death by Roo Roo, Monkeydick, Nights of Our Lives -- to name but a very few). Gwinn recently announced plans to move out west, but before he boards a jet plane, he's offering his expert instruction on the sweet science of improv one last time.
On Dec. 15 & 16, eligible students may register for his advanced longform workshops to be held at Atlantic Theater Company:
* Keeping it Real in a Surreal World
* Game as Character Behavior
I've seen Gwinn perform numerous times, and I can say with impunity that he is one of the most talented and consistently funny improvisers to walk into a scene. While we wish him the best in Los Angeles, his departure will leave yet another impossible-to-fill gap in the New York City improv scene. His is truly the type of improv to get excited about.
--For all workshop details, click here and be sure to e-mail him directly to reserve a spot. But make haste! On Wednesday, he offered four workshops, which sold out in three hours. And don't miss Death by Roo Roo every Saturday @ 9PM at The UCBT-NY.

In improv, one of the many ways to move a scene along is by raising the emotional stakes. So what better way to stoke interest in an improv show than by introducing hearty, Battle of the Bands-style competition? For weeks, various theater-house teams and indie groups have been duking it out Fight Club-style in basements and dingy backrooms. And now, for these next two Saturdays, the last ones standing will showcase their skills for bragging rights and cash dollars.
* The Bracket | SAT, NOV 21 @ 8:30PM at The Players Theatre (115 MacDougal) | $6 (e-mail to reserve tickets)
After three months of competition, more than 60 teams have been whittled down to three: Stallone, Megafauna and Identity Theft. Hosted by stand-up comics Rob Stern and Dan Black, The Bracket is "a league for NYC Improv teams [that] play through the pain. They do not respect line judges," according to Justin Noble. Saturday's winner will walk away with a cash prize.
* Queen of Sharks' CHOMPetition | SAT, NOV 21 @ 7PM at Identity Bar (511 East 6th Street) | $5
Jason Tyne-Zimmerman, ring leader of the indie team Queen of Sharks, has hosted the weekly CHOMPetition since last October. In the past year, Tyne-Zimmerman has lovingly converted the downstairs-bar space into a full-fledged, super-friendly improv zone. The vibe is always fun and Tyne-Zimmerman has been known to give away VHS cassettes of his favorite movies.
* Cagematch of Friends | SUN, NOV 22 @ 8PM at Richmond Shepard Theater (309 E. 26th) | $5
Just three teams Dangerbox (NYU), Maybe Sherman and Purple Crayon (Yale) squaring up to outlaugh the other two. By the look of things, this is a New York City college-crowd improv throwdown, and quite possibly one of the few true vestiges of improv nerdism in the city.
* UCBT-NY's 3-on-3 Improv Tournament | SAT, NOV 28 @ 8PM at UCBT-NY | $5
The Granddaddy of improv tournaments, the annual 3-on-3 Improv Tournament at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater is the Hoop-It-Up of make-em-up teams. The 3-on-3 dates back to 2003 when then-UCB artistic director Kevin Mullaney "was having trouble figuring out what shows to put up during Thanksgiving weekend," according to the IRC Improv Wiki. So should you find yourself orphaned next week, hop in line, crack a few PBRs and fight seasonal depression with good old-fashioned hee-hawing at the little black box under the Gristedes.

Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 10:00AM This postcard was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Flyer or Postcard Design at the 2007 ECNY Awards | Design: Scott Gursky As a general rule of thumb, Thursday nights at the Magnet Theater are a guarantee of joy (The Deconstruction, The Boss, Hello Laser, Moxie, Junior Varsity). But this week is extra-special because The Mantzoukas Brothers (Ed Herbstman and Jason Mantzoukas) will play at 11PM, showcasing their award-winning improv. The scenes they conjure are so good that they host a brief Q&A with the audience after the set. And if that doesn't make any sense, then you've probably never seen them perform -- it will.

Old Schoolers Krompf (Joe Wengert, Ryan Karels, Amey Goerlich and Neil Casey) will team up for some masterful make-em-ups TONIGHT @ 10:30PM at Under St. Mark's. This team, known for putting up the best breakfast spread at the Del Close Marathon, has been tagging-out and sweep-editing since 2001, back when you were sweating your ACT scores. Eight years later, this quad-squad is still at it, still pallin' around, still getting together to do some scenes. So for that, they are most definitely ... improv to get excited about.

Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 12:15PM Boom Chicago performs regularly at the Leidseplein Theater in Amsterdam | Photo: Plug 1Boom Chicago, the venerable European improv- and sketch-comedy group, will make its New York City debut at The New Island Festival this week. The festival will take place on New York City's Governors Island, and according to the official web site, alumni Seth Meyers and Jason Sudeikis will be joining Pete Grosz and Jordan Peele for a Boom Chicago All-Stars night of improv on Sunday, Sept. 13. Boom Chicago was founded in Amsterdam in 1993 by Andrew Moskos, Jon Rosenfeld and Ken Schaefle, who named the show after their hometown. The show was originally aimed at tourists, but today it has become a part of Amsterdam's locals' scene and one of the Netherlands' most famous comedy institutions. Alumni have gone on to Saturday Night Live, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, 30 Rock, Breaking Bad and Mad TV. Boom Chicago also developed the popular Comedy Central News for Comedy Central (NL) and some of the biggest viral videos on the web. The New Island Festival is part of NY400, a celebration to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage from Amsterdam to New York Harbor. • Some of the more notable alumni of Boom Chicago include: Seth Meyers, Josh Meyers, Ike Barinholtz, Jordan Peele, Colton Dunn, Dan Oster, Jason Sudeikis, Liz Cackowski, Allison Silverman, Pete Grosz, Kay Cannon, Tami Sagher, Nicole Parker and Greg Shapiro

keithhuang | 1 Comment in Improv Friday Aug 14 2009 Del Close Marathon XI - Survival Tips From Improv Iron Men & WomenBy: Keith Huang
Friday, August 14, 2009 at 6:00AM Supplemental vitamins never hurt anyoneImprov nerds of New York City: Now is the time to fill your cargo-shorts pockets with gummy worms. Del Close Marathon XI starts today at 4:30PM, and the digital clocks of The UCB are ready to start ticking off their 30-minute intervals. Improv geeks from all walks of life are ready to cram themselves into the black-box theaters of Chelsea, and everything tells us DCM-XI marks the first official year of round-the-clock-festival-information overload. While our willingness to consume photos, updates and tweets will rival our thirst for Pabst Blue Ribbon, our bodies, regardless of age, will have something to say about it all on Monday. So to get some advice on how best to manage the weekend, The Apiary solicited tips from bona fide marathon veterans. These Iron Men and Women of Improv are scheduled to perform in no fewer than four shows and as many as seven. So as the famous sticker says: Don't think. And don't be a dick. But do have fun, which, by the way, is a very important component of improv. And, lastly, if you're at the UCB and decide to exit the theater, please move your conversations down the street.Matt Besser | Photo: liezl was hereMatt Besser:1) Let the game come to you. 2) Stick to your offensive plan. 3) Don't let lack of home court advantage get to your head. 4) Leave plenty of salary cap room for 2010.
