Monday Jan 31 2011 Downy Brand Managers Capture Mike Birbiglia

Monday, January 31, 2011 at 1:50PM

It's day 6 of P&G's bid to get you to tell all your Facebook friends that you "like" something as mundane as fabric softener. If you haven't heard, Mike Birbiglia is being paid megabucks to lay about this Herald Square Macy's windowdoing absolutely nada for 7 straight days. It sounds like a dream gig, right?? The only catch is he must eat nothing but Downy for the duration of this stunt.

* Mike shares his Downy dinner with a fan

* There's still time to tweet things at him

* Or watch a live stream on Facebook

* Would you rather live in a Macy's window or an Ikea cafeteria?

Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 6:01PM Photo: Lonnie Lazar

Interesting. I spotted this headline link on my Facebook feed: "Sinbad Pulls a Huge Crowd to Macworld Keynote [Macworld 2011]." Although there's no footage yet of Sinbad's keynote address, I did find this Macworld clip from a while back:

I think that's interesting. And according to general manager of Macworld Paul Kent in this Wired article:

> “Sinbad fits the bill for our feature presenters, because he’s a celebrity who relies on technology to express inspiration,” Kent said. “It’ll be entertaining and info-taining and thought-provoking.”

I enjoyed Sinbad's badge that reads: "Sinbad Badness," but I didn't particularly enjoy Mike Daisey's big glass of Haterade:

> "I find it incredibly depressing that Sinbad has the keynote at Macworld, and I couldn't get them to even give me a speaking slot to try and shake their point of view. SINBAD. Nevertheless, we have sold out crowds, and we will persevere..."

Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 5:02PM According to an article today in Backstage:

> "The time where people were getting development deals based on seven good minutes [of standup] is over. Now people need to be savvy with what opportunities are out there, and just as active about creating opportunities for yourself," says [Kirsten] Ames. "You have to self-produce, even if you have a manager."

The rules of an Internet-fueled comedy industry are still being written, and comedians, agents, and managers are getting hip to the amorphous state of the business. "The most successful comedians, in my opinion, are Mike Birbiglia and Demetri Martin," says Ames. "They work their asses off, and they don't have naiveté about the business. You have to give your people things to make things happen."

I think what Ames is trying to say here is everybody needs to jack their strat™. I totally agree! Times have changed man. You can't be Standup McGoo anymore and expect to "make it" or "do anything of value with your life." If you really want to climb to the upper echelon of the comedyverse, you MUST HAVE 4 or more of the following before you can even think of getting to that level:

* A tight 7

* A weekly or monthly show "that doesn't suck"

* AHot in Cleveland spec script or a nice packet

* Several original celebrity impressions (i.e. Christopher Walken or Denzel Washington)

* The blessing of a comedy elder statesman

* A spot on a Saturday night improv team at a venue people care about

* Over 10K Twitter followers who aren't Filipino spambots

* A look that can be used in TV commercials to dramatically increase sales of cheeseburgers or insurance products

* Mad video skills

* A Tumblr with "major" book potential

* Some modicum of actual talent

Am I missing anything?

Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 3:07PM So I just finished a level 2 improv class this past Sunday--I felt pretty good about it! Really rode some serious synergy waves that night. After the graduation show, my instructor pulled everybody aside for some one-on-one notes. He said I should try more zany characters and do stuff that puts me outside of my head. Great advice! (Where are my compliments?) And then with a curious tone, he said, "You know Nate... you're actually kind of funny." Then he looked down at his notepad, lingered on the words for a moment, then burst into laughter. The laughter continued for several seconds.

How would you interpret this feedback??

Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 1:32PM --Anyone else notice that GQ Magazine has been publishing a lot more humor articles lately? I usually only read it when my wardrobe needs some fine tuning. (Double breasted cardigans: Still IN?) But I picked up the February issue and saw pieces by Todd LevinandScott Brown and Anthony King. Is GQ the WWD for working comics?

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 2:48PM By: Danny Tuss

Everyone loves a good drinking game. Except for people struggling with alcohol addiction, I suppose. So here's The BEST 2011 State of the Union Drinking Game. (I added the word 'best' here for search engine optimization.)

1 drink of beer:

Mention of any of these words:

Jobs

Economy

Bipartisan

Anal

"Let me be clear"

2 drinks of beer:

Republican caucus bursts into applause

Republican caucus bursts into flames

Waterfall until the camera pans away:

Any shot of Michelle Obama's righteous arms

Whenever they show that photo of Elena Kagan playing softball

1 shot:

A Congressman is snoring loudly

If Obama accidentally calls John Boehner, Mr. Boner

Mentions of lessons learned from Tuscon shooting (we didn't learn anything!)

Finish the bottle:

Gabrielle Giffords rides in on a Jazzy Power Chair

Bo Obama poops anywhere other than a congressional wee-wee pad

Someone throws a shoe
