Thursday Jun 30 2005 WeirDass - Best. Improv. Ever.
Thursday, June 30, 2005 at 9:53PM Today's post is brought to you by guest writer Kate Spencer of katelikesyou.com.It's every improviser/comedy nerd's dream: find the greatest improv partner in the world... and marry them. Comedy's cutest couple (okay, tied with Amy Poehler and Will Arnett), Stephanie Weir (MAD TV) and her dreamy, blue eyed husband Bob Dassie, (Baby Wants Candy, Dasariski) have done just that; and tonight at UCB, they'll take a suggestion and get all matrimonial on your ass in their two-person improvised show, WeirDass. In anticipation of tonight's epic improv event, I challenged some of your favorite improvisers, comedians, and variety show hosts with this burning question:Why is WEIRDASS the best improv show you've ever seen?Rachael Mason ((J)only (B)only): Totally fluid, nothing is ever dropped, every single thing is brought back and put into a new context, plus brilliant acting and character work.Justin "SweetChatty" Purnell (School Night): I think it's just that they have these incredibly truthful moments... I hate to say it's the acting, but they really do draw you in. They're just so damn honest.Erin Rose Foley (Nice Squad!): Because they truly try to make each other look good. That kind of support is often talked about and rarely achieved. The trust is tangible.Charlie Todd (Reuben Williams, Improv Everywhere): They play wonderfully real characters and subtle, amazing moments.Pat Baer (Tuscadero; 2005 ECNY Best Technician): Trust. Either of them can go ANYWHERE and the other is right there. If that doesn't motivate you to haul ass to Chelsea to be blown away, maybe this will:Have you seen WEIRDASS yet?Aziz Ansari (Punched a Wall): No I haven't. I think I'm seeing it on Friday, though I hear nothing but the best.WeirDass is appearing tonight only at the UCB Theatre at 8:PM.

The Apiary | Post a Comment in Sketch Thursday Jun 30 2005 Opening Night with the Manhattan Comedy Collective
Thursday, June 30, 2005 at 5:17AM Last night was the official premiere of the Manhattan Comedy Collective at Juvie Hall. The evening was split into 3 Acts; members of the collective and featured guests performed 10 minute sets, one after another from 7 to 11. Some of the highlights: --A man with an ENORMOUS CAMERA was in the front row during the performances, crouching and gettin' the shots. When asked, "Are you with the press?" He replied, "I'm with the N.Y. Daily News. We're doing a story on alternative comedy." --After a blistering improv rap set, Freestyle Love Supreme received a standing ovation. Beatbox whiz Chris Sullivan told The Apiary they're excited about the future--they have a TIGHT SLOT at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Also, FLS is doing a show TONIGHT at Ars Nova and you can see a nice write up about them in this week's NY edition of The Onion.Haseena (left) of TaDa! The Apiary | 4 Comments in TV/Film Tuesday Jun 28 2005 Who is Andy Milonakis?
Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at 8:49AM There seems to be a lot of confusion on the internet right now because people know Andy Milonakis as "that guy from the internet," but everyone's mixing him up with someone else!Is Andy Milonakis this dude?Nope! This is just some crazy retard.Oh! Andy's that internet guy who is always eating corn.Still wrong! That's a different internet SUPERSTAR named Thighmaster! What about this one? After much research, it turns out the fabled Star Wars Kid is NOT Andy Milonakis. Is he this guy?Not quite, dummy! That's internet quasi-celebrity Jason Mulgrew.Him?You're not even guessing now! That's Anderson Cooper. What about this? That's not Andy Milonakis! That's a copy of Bad Street Brawler for the Nintendo--one of the worst video games ever made!Well, I can't find a decent picture, but is Andy Milonakis actually The Man Show Boy?We've all thought the same thing. However, they are two different people!I give up.You were so close! If you really want to know who he is, go here!

The Apiary | 1 Comment | 2 References in General Interest Tuesday Jun 28 2005 IRC Torn Apart By Jealousy, Written Words
Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at 2:54AM As the rest of the world slowly comes to terms with Andy Milonakis' true age, some dudes on The Improv Resource Center have taken the Andy Milonakis discourse to other levels--like sharing personal negative opinions on Andy's new MTV show under the false pretense of a deeper deconstruction and then directing said opinions straight at the guy. One thing lead to another and then someone tangentially interjected:> This is like going into the plugs forum and telling someone their improv group sucks balls. It's really not cool to do, no matter what you think...and trust me, there are plenty of terrible improv groups that plug shows here.
...which made more people upset. Anyways, there's an old saying we used to use in high school whenever fights would break out at our parties. It was, "RESPECT THE HOUSE." The IRC is not the forum for revealing who the worst improv group is. The Apiary is! Just kidding... In other Andy news, apparently, MTV owns Andy and all of his videos now. You used to be able to get them at Angry Naked Pat, but not any more. There was another site that sprung up recently, but that doesn't seem to be working at the current time either.

The Apiary | Post a Comment in General Interest Monday Jun 27 2005 Stella tonight at the Anthology Film Archives
Monday, June 27, 2005 at 12:42PM The Stella publicity blitz has been consuming all of New York as of late. Via Gothamist, The Anthology Film Archives is doing a free screening tonight at 7PM of Wet Hot American Summer. After the film, the guys from Stella will come out for a Q&A and play an episode from the TV show that premieres tomorrow on Comedy Central @ 10:30. An account from someone who saw Stella at The Baxter screening a couple weeks ago said the audience Q&A there was "the most awkward and painful thing I've endured in a while." We're hedging that the questions asked tonight will be sublimely more stupid because there is simply no better way to lure out the craziest people in NYC than by coupling a Q&A with a FREE movie and FREE Grolsch beer.See Stella's site for more info!
