Monday Nov 30 2009 The Apiary Presents "Mystery Team Week"

Welcome to "Mystery Team Week," a celebration of the new movie by comedy team Derrick. The sketch- and improv-massive attackers, best known for their multiple millions of YouTube hits, will host the New York premiere of "Mystery Team" this Friday, Dec. 4, at Quad Cinemas (Tickets). The primary cast and crew will attend evening screenings to meet fans, host some Q&A and to show their hometown some long-awaited love. Derrick spent last summer on a promotional blitz, drumming up distributorship interest and meeting fans face-to-face.
In advance of Premiere Night, The Apiary touched base with Dominic Dierkes, one-third of the Mystery Team, who plays "Charlie (The Strongest Kid in Town)." Dierkes is en route to New York, while DC Pierson and Donald Glover are in Los Angeles, shooting NBC's "Community." However, the trio will make their Homecoming Trek by the weekend, Dierkes said.
For today, we asked Dominic to take a look at some recent photo mementos and comment on them. Here's what he said:
Photo courtesy Jennifer Morrison ^ The Austin premiere at the Drafthouse was thrilling and surreal at the same time. This screening was a huge transition for the movie and marked the beginning of the still ongoing theatrical release. Most of the time I was thinking, "I can't believe there's a place where you can order a beer while you're watching a movie. Why do people leave here?"
Photo courtesy of Katrina Davis ^ The wrap party was the same day as the last shot of the movie. Production was such an arduous process with so many major roadblocks that just to be at the end of it, knowing that we had the movie in the can was extremely satisfying even though we knew there was still tons more work to be done. Also, everyone got really drunk.
Photo courtesy of Derrick Comedy ^ Gainesville and Tallahassee were the first cities Mystery Team opened in after Austin. Here we are in Gainesville advertising ourselves on a wall in spray paint. That's a legal way to advertise your movie, right?
Photo: Conor Mangan ^ Our panel at Comic Con came at the tail end of an AMAZING weekend in San Diego. We distributed trading cards, manned a Mystery Team booth, held a screening, and did a panel -- all of which were met with an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm and excitement that we found permeates Comic Con as a whole. That convention is pure, unironic fun and is a must-attend for anyone who enjoys being a fan of stuff.
Photo courtesy of Derrick Comedy ^ We've been doing a thing called "Sword Club" where if you see the movie twice in its run in any given city, we present you with an individually numbered foam sword with a handwritten inspirational quote on it. If you see the movie three times, we give you a dinosaur. And if someone sees the movie a yet to be determined number of times (it was 10 times in Phoenix), then DC will get your name tattooed somewhere on his body. Members of the Sword Club will all have their names featured on the DVD.
Photo: Dan Eckman ^ Some folks from Pixar saw Mystery Team in Sundance and offered to set up an employee screening at their facilities as part of a program called Pixar University. They also offered us an extensive tour of their facilities. Being huge Pixar fans, we said, "Fuck yes." The screening went great and the tour was an incredible experience. We got to see UP concept art, explore an actual secret passageway, and embarass ourselves in the gift store. That Pixar trip did nothing but reinforce our perception of that studio as an insanely creative, driven, and talented group of people who give a huge shit about every detail of their work. And it shows. It was a true pleasure to be there.

Comedian and Lincoln Lodge favorite Monte made his television debut November 18 with the new segment, "Off the Eatin' Path" on WCIU's morning program, "You & Me This Morning". And hey, L.A.! Please do make it a point to attend the 2009 Channy Awards this Sunday, December 6, at the legendary Cinespace. CHI expat and golden boy Matt Braunger is set to host this raucous event celebrating all things short and hilarious (of the video variety).

We're signing out until next Monday so we have more time to stuff food in our pieholes and shop. In the meantime, here are some items to help you through the holiday.
TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR THANKSGIVING BREAK
--Poke holes in the plastic film before microwaving your dinner.
--Don't trample anyone at Wal-Mart.
--There is NO PRICE that makes Entourage worth buying on DVD.
--Save the awkward dinner table revelations for your gay wedding.
--Relatives want to hear stories about your glamorous life in New York, just repurpose some Sex and the City or Law and Order plotline and make it your own.
--The earlier you get to the airport, the more time you'll have to Twitter about how you're at the airport.
--Score points with the in-laws by not being a total asshole.
--Oh, and then there's this:

NOTES
--Eliot and Ilana Glazer--possibly the most versatile brother/sister comedy duo since Donny & Marie Osmond--hosted the 2-year anniversary of High School Talent Show at the UCB Theater, a monthly rotating sampler of the freaky and geeky characters roaming the halls of Upper Central Bay High School.
--Kurt Braunohler, Nick Ross, Jill Donnelly, Matt McCarthy, Katina Corrao, Adolpho Blaire, and Rob Lathan lent their considerable talents to the evening.
--Andrea Rosen played an awesome advice dispensing hag with a thick jewwy warble who has "never spent a dime" in her life. She gave useful tips on how to save money on condoms including this keeper: "If you're over 30 -- grow up and have a kid already!"
--In the pictures above and below, Eliot and Ilana sing a repelling version of the Boyz II Men/Mimi collab, One Sweet Day. We don't have perfect pitch so we couldn't tell if it was off key or not, but damn, Ilana's got some pipes! If they're taking requests, we'd love to see them cover Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow's enchanting ode to surviving sex tape scandals and cancer next time.
--Eliot has been racking up huge wins all over the Internet lately with hits like My Parents Were Awesome and his Bea Arthur tattoo. The big question is: will we see a MPWA blog-to-book before the Black Friday doorbuster sale at Urban Outfitters??

By: Aparna Nancherla
This past weekend marked the eighth annual premiere of Washington Improv Theater's Seasonal Disorder show, in which audience's own life-based suggestions are used to create a particular family's holiday experience. According to cast member Karin Hammerberg, the Friday show featured a family snowed into a church with Pastor Jay who carried a guitar but never played it, Uncle Roscoe (no relation to anyone) but the boy scout leader, two twentysomethings destined for love but from dysfunctional families, and 15-year-old Russell and his misguided parents. Sounds like a recipe for holiday magic!
In addition, WIT's many other troupes including Caveat, Jackie, Season Six, Jinx, and IMusical also presented shows running the gamut from monoscenes to tales with singing to exploring worlds within worlds to stories that are told backwards to a format cryptically entitled "The Slacker."
Full details on WIT's holiday run schedule (Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, now thru Jan. 2) are available here.
--Aparna Nancherla is a Washington D.C.-based comedian whose credits include NBC Stand Up for Diversity finalist and Last Comic Standing. More importantly, she is on Twitter and her stand up and improv performance schedule stays current here.
