Tuesday Oct 31 2006 30 Rock @ The Museum of Television and Radio -- 10.30.6
Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at 9:54AM Tracy and TinaThe Museum of Television & Radio hosted a panel with the creative forces behind 30 Rock as part of their ongoing Media as Entertainment discussion series.NOTES--During the Q&A session, it was revealed that a gaggle of real live NBC Pages had flocked to the event. You could tell which audience members were Pages by the existence of hope and promise in their eyes. --What current TV programs does Tina Fey imbibe?: Project Runway and The Office.--Despite writing the show with Alec Baldwin in mind, Tina confessed she didn't think they would get him. Casting directors auditioned nearly 60 actors for Alec's role. When Baldwin came to host SNL for the 12th time, Tina said to Lorne, "Let's just ask him." AND SO IT WAS. --Something that is uniquely engaging about 30 Rock is the show's ability to crossover with the stars and execs of the NBC Universe in semi-realistic ways: Conan O'Brien had a featured role in an episode that was screened, Chris Parnell and the NBC Page Program have supporting spots, even former GE head Jack Welch got a shout out. --They've used 8 directors so far for this season and apparently that is typical for a new show. --Including Fey, the show has 10 writers--a mix of vets and hot-shot rookies. FUN FACT: Improvisation is encouraged with the dialogue. --The network has NEVER given the 30 Rock writers a note in reference to Studio 60. In fact, the words "Studio" and "60" weren't even mentioned during the discussion or the Q&A. --The MT&R has a keen eye for engaging television panels, however, engaging doesn't always equal longevity. Judd Apatow disciples might note that both Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks were cancelled almost immediately following panels at the MT&R in LA. It seems like 30 will rally through the season--the upcoming move to Thursdays shows the brass has faith. --Tracy Morgan's on-screen entourage was SPOTTED in the crowd. --UPCOMING: The museum is hosting Welcome to the Funhouse with Robert Smigel on November 9th. Enter the promo code "funhouse" when buying tix online to receive a $10 discount on the non-member price.Writer Robert Carlock and Actress Jane Krakowski

The Apiary | 2 Comments in Comedian Babies Monday Oct 30 2006 Secret Wars: Comedy Central Takes on YouTube?
Monday, October 30, 2006 at 11:55AM According to The New York Times, a battle is being waged in the online universe: Comedy Central vs. YouTube. An article published today titled, YouTube Is Purging Copyrighted Clips states:> [YouTube] last week began purging copyrighted material from Comedy Central, including clips from YouTube stalwarts like "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," "The Colbert Report" and "South Park." The action was "a result of third-party notification by Comedy Central," according to one such e-mail message sent to a YouTube user, Jeff Reifman, who broke the news on the Web site NewsCloud.
We jogged over to NewsCloud to find these allegations by Mr. Reifman:> For a long time, Comedy Central has passively allowed the sharing of online clips of its shows--because let's face it, it's helped them generate the kind of water cooler talk that has made them a ton of money.
Good point, Jeff! We think Peabo Bryson is also employing this passive-agressive stance with YouTube for those reasons as well. Tweet Petite writes:> I don't get it. [The Daily Show and The Colbert Report] are time-specific. There is no market for used Stewart shows outside of iTunes, and YouTube postings can't really be cutting into that market for two reasons: 1) there isn't much of a market there, and 2) downloading from YouTube is so complicated that if you want Stewart stuff on your iPod it's just easier to pay for it. On the other hand, the availability of those clips on YouTube, from which they have been copied to endless blogs, is phenomenal advertisement to those shows' exact target audience...
Queries for Southpark, Colbert, Jon Stewart on YouTube reveal tens of thousands of working results. So the question is: is Comedy Central really the ones asking YouTube to remove their content? Or is Google behind it? Seriously, Google knows how much free PR Comedy Central is banging out of YouTube, it wouldn't be surprising if the mysterious "third party" was Google.

The Apiary | 2 Comments in The Beehive Thursday Oct 26 2006 FUSE Pits Their Sketch Group Against MTV's Sketch Groups
Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 12:13PM We received a press release moments ago for The Whitest Kids U Know's homecoming show which casually stated that the WKUK television debut on FUSE is coming in January of '07--and not early next month as previously announced. Doesn't take a genius to read between the lines: The WKUK are going head to head against MTV's Human Giant (and Nick Cannon Presents: Short Circuitz) in a BATTLE FOR TELEVISION SUPREMACY! Press release from What Are Records after the jump.
