The Apiary | Post a Comment in NVW Tuesday Oct 30 2007 Is Someone Out to Get Rififi?

Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at 12:34PM Is there some kind of disinformation or smear campaign underway against Rififi? We overheard someone last week saying that Rififi is letting its liquor license expire on the 31st. Since shows are still being scheduled as normal and no one seems too concerned by the rumors, we didn't think much about it until yesterday. We got an alarming email which included a link to an old Brooklyn Vegan post that has fresh and very specific comments alleging the venue's demise is nigh. Huh? Let it be known that anyone who comments on a post that is months old is either crazy or has a personal connection. Where are these facts in the BV comments page coming from? We looked up Rififi/Cinema Classics at the NY State Liquor Authority's site and though it says the license does expire on the 31st, there was no information on that page or in any of the published SLA media alerts suggesting that the venue was in trouble. Guess we'll find out for sure what happens on November 1st, but in the meantime someone should sniff out the fiend who's starting these rumors. Our guess is it's probably a hostile neighbor or someone with an agenda. Maybe someone's trying to manipulate the listing price or nearby property values--who knows.

Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at 10:04AM ADULT SWIM MIGHT GET WEIRDER: Xavier: Renegade Angel (from makers of Wonder Showzen ) set to debut on Adult Swim 11/2.DANE IN REAL LIFE: Turns out Dan In Real Life had a decent opening weekend. Critics are also giving the film accolades, reluctantly admitting they liked Dane Cook 's performance.COLBERT CAMPAIGN REPORT--From a blog covering the fascinating world of Election Law: "A corporation cannot fund the express advocacy of a candidate for federal office out of its treasury funds. So General Motors could not run a newspaper ad saying 'Vote for Colbert for President.' The funding has to come from its political action committee. But there's an exemption in the law for 'any news story, commentary, or editorial distributed through the facilities of any broadcasting station, newspaper, magazine, or other periodical publication, unless such facilities are owned or controlled by any political party, political committee, or candidate.'" --RADIO SENSATION Jesse Thorn interviews Colbert. --Ed Helms throws his hat into the ring. Perhaps his appearance at The Office convention was his first campaign stop. --What would Colbert's cabinet look like? ARE WE STILL TALKING ABOUT KNOCKED UP ?: Even the trailer was revolutionary; now more R-rated trailers are hitting the Web. BEE MOVIE BUZZ: We here at The Apiary love anything involving bees and/or buzz. Thus far, Seinfeld's film has gotten two stinging reviews. Both Variety and Hollywood Reporter, two outlets who exist solely to fellate everyone in the business, compare the film unfavorably against Ratatouille . This sort of lukewarm reception by the trade mags is comparable to the internal turmoil encountered by a Nintendo Power staff reviewer when deciding to give a game an 8 or a 9. Could this film make Seinfeld a bee-list celebrity? In other news, Seinfeld is guest-hosting Spike Feresten this Saturday. HULUBALOO: Does Hulu have a chance? NBC/Fox has made the beta launch of their YouTube killer private, so the next best thing is this link. 30 ROCKS INTERNET: 30 Rock does best SNL imitation yet by having a viral video hit.DVD PICKS:For Halloween, Paul Lynde Halloween Special . The Apiary | Post a Comment in General Interest Friday Oct 26 2007 Video Writers' Room

Friday, October 26, 2007 at 4:48PM Someone had written in recently saying:> I've submitted the same video for the past three weeks from my group for New Video Wednesday. I guess I'm just curious as to why it hasn't been put up yet, or why we haven't at least gotten some kind of fed up response after bugging you three weeks in a row. Is it that you just don't like the sketch?

We actually like giving feedback here for this sort of thing because we feel constructive criticism is an important part of the writing process. We explained our thoughts on the sketch's weaknesses and the person wrote back with a counterstatement. We then forwarded both arguments onto an associate for his thoughts. His response yielded insights that went far beyond the casual "hahahahaha" and "I liked it!" that one might get from YouTube commenters. It was actually really interesting to think critically for once. We think this could be the basis for a new column. If you have any interest in submitting a video specifically for a public discussion on its strengths and weaknesses and/or thoughts on how to improve the game of the scene, send it to theapiary@gmail.com with Video Writers' Room in the subject line. We try to run a fairly positive ship here at The Apiary; we're not into tearing anyone down for the sake of sounding cool. Hopefully, this could be a neat exercise in peer evaluation and constructive criticism.
