The Apiary | Post a Comment in The Beehive Friday Sep 30 2005 Bloomberg Invokes New York City Underground Comedy Festival Week Mandate

Friday, September 30, 2005 at 6:58AM Lifted directly from the New York City Underground Comedy Festival website:> I, MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK, IN RECOGNITION OF THIS IMPORTANT EVENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM OCTOBER 2-10, 2005 IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK AS: “NEW YORK CITY UNDERGROUND COMEDY FESTIVAL WEEK”

With that in mind, next week is as good a week as any to get out and see some live comedy if you are not doing so already. This year, the festival's scheduling has responded well to the popularity of the sketch, improv, and variety acts that dominate these webpages. The PIT, the UCBT, Rififi, Juvie Hall, & Galapagos are all hosting events this time around.

The Apiary | Post a Comment in General Interest Thursday Sep 29 2005 Critical Discussion: Who Will Pay $59.50 to See Joy Behar?

Thursday, September 29, 2005 at 7:31AM Lame internet snarkiness isn't usually something that's condoned here at The Apiary, but after seeing on Gothamist a link to the upcoming New York Comedy Festival, one thought went racing through the mind:Who Will Pay 59.50 to see Joy Behar? In fact, every show at this so-called festival is exorbitantly priced! What are these organizers trying to pull? Who is going to these shows? Triumph sticks out as the sole shining beacon against the otherwise standard, misery inducing, 2-drink minimum comedy club fare, but the $$$$$ of tickets will send many fans scurrying away. Here is an elaborate spreadsheet we've created comparing the New York Comedy Festival's prices to other high-pro comedy events in the city: Joy Behar 59.50 Comedians of Comedy 20 Del Close Marathon 20 Flight of the Conchords 15 Neil Hamburger 10 ASSSSCAT FREE!

The Apiary | 9 Comments Wednesday Sep 28 2005 Look Who Stopped By: It's Anthony DeVito!

Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at 8:02AM *KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK* Whoooooooo is it?Ah! Well--whaddaya know! It's Anthony DeVito! Star of VH1, Mayor of Snazzytown, and the Captain of US Weekly's Fashion Police Department. This certainly is unexpected. Come in, come in! We were just wondering how you've been. What's new Mr. DeVito?> I was on my way to OTB to put a c-note on Belgian Waffle in the 5th, when I realized I was in front of The Apiary's corporate headquarters. So, after an inappropriately sexualized security check, I dropped in to say hello, and to talk about myself. In that order.I've just shot my second music video. Recently, nearly 2 seconds of me in a mailman outfit lit up an otherwise boring Bon Jovi video. Seriously, edit me out... total snoozefest. But it's currently rocketing up the Vh1 Top 20 Countdown. Screw you, Black Eyed Peas! Then, I was asked by my pal Melanie Salvatore (of all-lady sketch group Bitches Funny) to appear in the new video for Matthew Brookshire's ditty "I Fall Out." The scenario: a bunch of oddball actor-types are auditioning for a commercial. Melanie plays the casting director and I "play" a corny, conceited leading-man wannabe. It was quite a stretch. We had a great time and it should turn out well. (I just hope VH1 can handle another dose of DeVitocil.) Oh, and don't forget to shoplift a copy of Us Weekly. I write for Fashion Police every damn week. Screw you, Chloe Sevigny!

That sure was a swell story. See ya later, Mr. Devito! Thanks for stopping by!

The Apiary | 2 Comments in General Interest Tuesday Sep 27 2005 Inside With: Donald Glover, DC Pierson, & Dominic Dierkes, of the sketch group The Wicked Wicked Hammerkatz and the newly formed Derrick

Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at 6:49AM In addition to writing and performing full-time in The Wicked Wicked Hammerkatz, and directing their college arm, Hammerkatz NYU, Donald Glover, DC Pierson, and Dominic Dierkes (pictured from L-R) have created another sketch and video variety group called Derrick. It tests itself out this week at the UCBT's 7:00 Workout, which is sort of like a dress rehearsal for shows that could eventually become UCB anchors. The guys of Derrick sat down with The Apiary to answer the questions that matter most. What goes on at these 7:00 shows? Is it like watching a real performance?Don: Yeah, it's a real performance. At least I think so. DC: You sure? Don: Are you? DC: Not entirely. Dominic: If we're gonna embarrass ourselves, I'd rather not do it. Don: Deal. Show's cancelled. What are your roles with Hammerkatz NYU?DC: Donald and I are both still NYU students, and we co-direct HKATZNYU. The Hammerkatz that performs at UCB was born out at NYU, but our founder (and director of Wicked Wicked Hammerkatz) AJ Morales wanted to found a sketch comedy club like the one he had when he was an undergrad at Arizona State, that would continue after the original members were gone. Donald: The goal with HKATZNYU is to be the new National Lampoon. We want to be a school for sketch. Like, if somebody's applying for a writing staff in ten years, we want to have the sort of reputation where if they have "Hammerkatz" on their resume, that's a big deal. DC: We want our free shows to be the best part of going to NYU. Which is actually not that difficult, because most of going to NYU is paying 40 grand to realize how not unique you are. Donald: Also being forced to hear big loud cliques of kids in berets loudly quote Family Guy when you're trying to read. DC: Yes, also that.Speaking of the name of the group, Is the "Wicked Wicked" what separates the two Hammerkatz entities? Or is it the NYU?DC: Uh...the pretentious, half-baked way I explain it on the HKATZNYU website is that when there's a band in the US and a band in the UK with the same name, the England band just throws "UK" at the end of the name. Thus, Hammerkatz NYU is the Hammerkatz of NYU. It's confusing, granted. I hope it's confusing in a good way, where people aren't always clear who they're going to see but they know they can trust the name.Donald, regarding your recent Late Night appearances, how does it feel to be a nationally recognized celebrity?Donald: It's not that weird. It's cool to have people walking down the street say "Hey! you're the black guy from Conan!", but then I walk two steps and people stop and go "Hey! You're Kanye West!" Two more steps and "Hey! You're James Earl Jones" Basically, what I'm trying to say is...Conan thinks I'm James Earl Jones.Which of you is funnier?DC: Donald. Dominic: Donald. Donald: Donald.Has DC told any of you guys what the DC stands for?Donald: I was told it stood for "Derrick Comedy". But I bet Dominic was just trying to scare me before I went to bed. Dominic: I thought it helped you sleep? We'll figure out what it stands for one of these days! But, is there anything else the global internet community needs to know right now?DC: Keep checking derrickcomedy.com for audio sketches that will make your iPod funnier. We just posted a video that's a pretty good example of the style of stuff we'll be doing on Thursday. Check it out. You aren't doing anything better at work.Derrick is pop culture, hip hop, sketch comedy, and death. It features FRAN GILLESPIE as THE GIRL and films by Dan Eckman. It will play in a 7:00 o'clock Workout Slot this Thursday at the UCB Theater before heading down to Atlanta for a weekend of shows at Push Push Theater.
