Tuesday Aug 30 2011 TJ Miller Extends Into Compact Discs

Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 3:45PM Ever since Apple stopped putting optical drives in their MacBook Airs, I've been trying to figure out what to do with ALL THE USELESS CD PLAYERS in my apartment. Should I donate them to the underprivileged? Should I use them to incite a Party City looting free-for-all? I learned today there's a reason to keep at least one around for just another couple of days: Comedy Central announced the release date of TJ Miller'sdebut stand up album, The Extended Play E.P.

> Among the fastest-rising comedy stars in the country, T.J. Miller, was named one of the "10 Comics to Watch" by Variety and one of the 12 Rising Stars of Comedy by Entertainment Weekly in 2008 and was included as one of ten comics to watch on COMEDY CENTRAL's "Hot List" in 2009. COMEDY CENTRAL Records releases T.J. Miller's "The Extended Play EP" CD on Tuesday, September 13.

> Miller's potential is realized on this amazing hip-hop/pop/folk album and for the first time he’s expressing himself both emotionally and physically through music. With guest stars galore, great beats, and lyrics you’ll be chewing over for months or at least the rest of the evening, this is more than a comedy rap album – it's a life soundtrack you can play loudly in your car. With videos (featuring said star guests) being released in the weeks prior to and through the CD release, the album is being launched in anticipation of Miller's hour special on COMEDY CENTRAL, which debuts later this year.

Monday, July 11, 2011 at 1:35PM This Wednesday marks the arrival of Russell Howard, the latest in a fine line of heretofore unknown UK comedians and British people named Russell ready for their USA close-up. He debuts at the The UCBT-NY, which has become the de-facto venue for these sorts of 1st appearances, as most of the theater's seats are taped-off for tipped-off industry on the lookout for the NEXT BIG THING.

Kind of a Joel McHale/Dane Cook mashup, right? I wonder who does his highlights? My hair could use some. According to The News of the World, Russell is "Britain's hottest young comic." They seem like a credible source!

Jessi Klein, Joe Mande, Andrea Rosen, Jared Logan and Sara Schaefer are five of our favorite funny people in New York.

We might love them even more now that we know that this Sunday they'll be coming together for a great cause -- "We Love You: A Benefit For Planned Parenthood." We spoke with the show's producer and host, Rose Surnow, about the serious politics of bringing so many hilarious people together.

Why do a comedy show to benefit Planned Parenthood?

Well, as you probably know, the Republicans in Congress submit a budget proposal that bans all federal funding to Planned Parenthood. This means that at a time when 46.6 million Americans have no health insurance, they want to cut an organization that provides free check-ups, STD and AIDS tests, medication, health care and family planning. It doesn't make any sense. Now, more than ever, we need to protect Planned Parenthood so that the millions of women without health care can continue to take care of their bodies.

So the comics you asked were into supporting the cause?

It's funny, I've been trying to get Jessi Klein on a show for a while, and I think this issue must be dear to her because she immediately responded that she would be involved. I'm lucky enough that I've been able to get all the other incredible comics on my shows before, so we already had a relationship. But generally, I think people are more willing to do shows if they are into the cause. It definitely makes it easier.

You've organized shows to support other political causes in the past. What do you think the relationship between comedy and politics is?

Well, I'm very political and I'd like to use whatever skills and resources I have to support causes I'm passionate about. Also, I'd like to make politics fun and engaging. Let's go out and see New York's best comics, have a blast and support something awesome -- a win-win!

Stand-up comedy is often an entertaining medium to speak up about things that can be subversive and highly political. Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Mort Sahl, George Carlin, Janeane Garofalo, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert are all hilarious comics who use their political beliefs to get laughs, but also to make people think more critically. That's the goal, you know?

Abbi Crutchfield & Andrew "Soce" Singer host "Positively Awesome" | Photo: Amiessence Fine Arts

By: Abbi Crutchfield & Andrew Singer

Leave it to Abbi Crutchfield and Andrew Singer to come up with "Positively Awesome," quite possibly the most host-friendly comedy showcase in the five boroughs, or at the very least, in the Lower East Side. Their showcase has quickly gained traction among the city's Funny Illuminati, if only because the co-hosts share less than one degree of separation with nearly every living, breathing comic in the tri-state area. The next installment of Positively Awesome is next Tuesday, and to beat the drum, Abbi and Andrew -- both longtime Apiary contributors -- lofted some softballs to each other.

ANDREW: Performers and audience have mentioned how posh and unusual the room is. Should a comedy show be in such a fancy space?

ABBI: Cellar 58 is a swanky wine bar that I thought would attract an audience of balding intellectuals who wear leather shoes. Instead it has drawn balding intellectuals who wear hooded sweatshirts. The unique look of the low-lit room from its walls covered in cork collages and wine bottles to its glass door backdrop inspires comics to riff on the décor, which I love. It’s sexy and sophisticated, like a Diane Lane movie.

ANDREW: How would you address the rumors that we are dating?

ABBI: You love women the way I love IKEA. I appreciate that it exists but I’m never gonna go there. I like that you’re out and people still think we’re a couple. Confusion may come from the fact that I produce The Living Room Show with my husband Luke Thayer who is also a comedian. And who is also hit on by men.

Photo: Anya Garrett Among the chosen for this year's New Faces of Comedy at Just For Laughs Montreal was one of last year’s ECNY nominees for the emerging comic award and all-around New York alt comedy scene hero, Mike Lawrence. I talked to Mike--who's in Montreal right now--about the audition process, how he’s preparing for his performances and how comedy connects him to his mother.

How long have you been doing stand up and what inspired you to start?

I've been doing stand-up for what will be five years as of November 5th. Yes, I remember the first day I did it. I'm very sentimental. I was inspired to do it because my mom did it for years. That initially turned me off, but I realized it was something I could do too, and besides it would help me understand her more. It's worked well for that purpose.

If you had to describe your style to someone who had never seen you perform, what would you say?

I think my style is very dark but playful. A lot of the material is personal but I'd like to believe there's enough fun in the writing to keep it from being too depressing. Although sometimes I just come off as too depressing. I do not, however come off as too playful.

How did you find out that you were one of the New Faces of Comedy for this year's Just for Laughs Montreal?

I was called. I cried. I won't lie. Getting into a festival made me do something I haven't done since the montage at the beginning of Up.

Can you describe what the audition process entailed?

I found out I got the first audition in November while at a wrestling event at Madison Square Garden. I got to see a guy legdrop another guy through a table and found out I'd have a chance to get into a major comedy festival, all in the same night. Very exciting stuff. I did that first audition in December, then a callback in February, and then a final callback in May. I'd change up a joke here and there but it mostly stayed the same. I knew the set I wanted to have, and have remained focused.

How does knowing you'll be performing for a room of talent scouts and network executives change the way you typically prepare for a set?

It doesn't scare me too much. I know what I can do and have survived or triumphed in some really tough situations. I've done shows at 2am in front of seven drunk people. A packed room full of hungry people doesn't phase you when you've done some of the shows and mics I have. If anything, I've had to power down a bit and just be thankful the crowds are so great.

What kind of specific opportunities are you hoping to get from this experience?

I'd like to get some work out of it. I'm one of the unsigned comics here and while I've been working on my craft for a good long while now, it'd be cool to see it pay off a little financially. I'm hungry both literally and figuratively, for whatever opportunities come. It's more exciting than anything. Most importantly, I feel I belong here, and that's something that's really comforting. The talent of this crop of new faces is staggering.

Are there any other acts you are excited to see while you're in Montreal?

There are a few shows I'd like to see, but I think it's more important to support the other new faces if I can. I feel like we're all in this together. It's been very supportive. I will probably also catch the Kevin Smith lecture on Thursday. I can't hide who I am.

What's next for you when you return to New York City?

My best friend Dan St. Germain and I are co-headlining a night at Comix on September 16th with Mike Recine featuring and Sean Donnely headlining. I'm going to use these next two months to really prepare for that and get some new stuff. I feel hard work got me here and it's what I have to keep doing. I'll be at whatever open mics and shows are willing to have me and will continue to coproduce the Woodshed open mic on Saturdays with Dan. I want to help other comics and hope next years crop contains some of the Woodshed regulars. I have a feeling it will.

The Apiary | Post a Comment | 3 References tagged Steve Byrne in Stand Up Thursday Feb 25 2010 What Should We Do With This Sinbad DVD?

Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 1:24PM We were momentarily stunned while opening the mail today. Sandwiched between a Chinese take out menu (how'd that get in there??) and a final notice to renew our subscription to SELF Magazine, was a new Sinbad DVD that--according to the back of the box--is "packed" with "material" that's a "must-own for any true comedy/funk music fan."

What exactly should we do with this Sinbad DVD? Is there a proper use for it? Should we watch it?? Suggestions welcome!
